Advent Calendar

So we made our Advent calendar.  I took felt and made a Christmas tree and the little pockets so that the kids can pull out a piece of paper that tells what we will be doing that day. (Decorating the Christmas tree, making Christmas decorations, reading the Christmas story, etc.)  At first I started hand stitching the pockets and got 4 done in about 3 hours.  My friend was kind enough to let me borrow her sewing machine so I was able to get the other 21 pockets done in an hour.  I was just shocked at how fast it went!  Plus it was very exact and precise and when I was hand stitching I was not exact or precise.  It's amazing how fast things go when you use a machine.  Once I got home, the boys and I, had fun decorating the Christmas tree and the pockets. If you are looking for a fun project to do with kids this is something you can do.  You could actually have your older kids help you sew the pockets to put in candy or whatever you want to do.  My kids are 10 months, 3 and 5 years old so I just did the sewing and gave them free reign over decorating the tree and the pockets.
This pocket I had stitched and I'm pretty confident it took me 25 minutes and I was able to do a probably 15 pockets in 25 minutes with the sewing machine.  They are not perfect but they work.
My boys are so proud of their advent calendar.  John tells me that the white at the base of the Christmas tree reminds him of a rabbits tale.  Sigh....not much I can do when I let the kids have full reign on how to decorate the advent calendar.

I just took a large sheet of red felt for the background, then I cut out the Christmas tree and cut out 25 pockets.  Hot glued the tree and all the decorations and pockets.  The tree I would have let the kids completely decorate but I have the HOT glue gun which gave me a blister a couple times and I just didn't want my kids to have a burnt finger. But if you had the low temperature glue gun you could have the kids completely decorate the tree.  With the numbers I did all the numbers with glitter glue.  The kids got a little to close and touched the glue before it dried so it's not perfect and then they wanted more glitter so poured gold dust on the glue with got on the felt so it looks a little dirty but I'm pleased with the results and I'm ready to start December with all sorts of fun activities for the kids - between our Advent Calendar Activities, our Advent scripture verses and our mischievous stuffed animal we should have fun this December.
I finished the evening eating a snowman that I bought at my favorite bakery.  It was a cute little snowman and it had a strawberry filling that was SO awesome! Bring on winter and Christmas.  This snowman will be the closest we get to having snow over in Taiwan.

It's a Date

We had our Thursday date and instead of just going groccery shopping we actually went on a date.  We  went to the mall near our house and had Coldstone ice cream.  Bonus was that there was a special going on at Coldstone so we were able to get two large ice creams for the price of one.  It was a good day of looking around and just spending time together as a couple.
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!
Yummy ice cream!

25 Days of Advent - Scripture Verses

The other day on Facebook I read about how Costco had Advent Calendars and I was all excited.  When I got to Costco I discovered that while it was an Advent calendar the focus was on getting a piece of candy for each day.  So I am in the process of making an Advent Calendar that I can use year after year.  Each day there will be a different activity for the kids and I to do together as a family, which will be another blog post. While I started thinking about everything you can do for the Advent calendar and realized that those things are all fun but what I really want is to focus on Scripture.

What I really wanted to do was have a family time where we counted down the time to Christmas reading Scripture.  My kids are rather young and what I found online never really worked for them so I created my own thing.  25 days of scripture verse taken from both the Old Testament and the New Testament getting our hearts ready for the birth of Jesus.  Click on the 25 Days of Scripture Verse getting ready for Christmas. Enjoy the 25 verses I hope that they will help you get ready for this Christmas Season. I cut out each verse and made a little paper chain so that my boys can cut the verses and we can read it every day. I can't wait for December 1st to start.

English Playgroup

I love watching the kids play with one another.  The kids were playing together and having fun.  It's fun watching the difference between my kids and other kids.  Little M didn't want to wear his sweater or jacket and just wanted to run around without shoes and short sleeves where the other kids were wearing winter jackets and all bundled up.
I guess I took a lot of pictures of Little H!

Sunday Specials

Sundays it seems that everything gets SO busy.  Especially either right before or during the Christmas holiday.  This Sunday seemed to be no different.  We had a mission team from South Africa who wanted to share their testimonies - one was a former ballet dancer who had her dance taken away (bad hip) and then given back to her so she dances for Jesus and the other girl who shared talked about how God opened doors in her life.  Then we had the baptism of baby J a sweet little baby boy.  It was just a busy Sunday!

Happy, happy birthday!

Happy Birthday sweet I!  We had a great time celebrating little I birthday.  We let the kids play with one another and then the adults enjoyed a game of 4 on the couch. No one won the game because we got so distracted and by the time we had to leave we were still at 2 guys and 2 girls!

Little N's Singing Performance

Little N's class had to sing songs during chapel today.  The class sang 6 songs and they did a great job.  Little N has truly turned a corner with his language because he was singing his songs, doing the motions and just truly enjoying himself up on stage.  We did videotape some of the songs but I don't know how to get it off the video camera and onto my blog.  He did an amazing job and I am so proud of him.  His teacher told me that he will get up on stage and sing his heart out, do the motions and just close his eyes and enjoy the moment. Enjoy the pictures.

Family Adventure - 18 peak mountain

I miss the time when we were able to take our Monday's go off and find a new place to explore.  Today we tried to go to 18 peak mountain after picking up Little N from school.  One of the things I forget is that Little N struggles big time when we go places with lots of crowds.  He hates the attention and when people want to take pictures of him.  So for the first half of our adventure Little N was crying and throwing a fit.  Then once we got away from the crowds Little N did better and enjoyed our adventure. Just need to remember to plan better - have food available, start the adventure in a quiet area and just have lots and lots of patience.
I love, love this picture!!  Just on our adventure.

VEF Thanksgiving potluck

We had a Thanksgiving potluck at Victory English Fellowship.  At the same time we started decorating for Christmas.  The fellowship and food was so good!  It's always nice to spend time together eating and talking with people!

Family Games

We have started playing games with the boys.  Sometimes they play it the right way and sometimes we just stop playing the game and move onto something else.  I'm very proud of John because he patiently tries to explain how to play the game and try to make sure that the boys play the right way.
Welcome to our blog! We try to keep this current for family and friends. We moved to Taiwan in February 2011 and are trying to keep in contact with loved ones through this blog. We love comments and will respond back if you have questions or comments!! Thanks for checking us out!!
