Relay for Life!!

We have been on a team raising money to help find a cure for cancer. Our group was called Wizard for a Cause (off Wizard of Oz)! Yesterday was the walk through the night. They had a survivor dinner and then the survivors walked, rode on golf carts, and a trailer to the park where there were tons of LUMINARIES (white bags with candles inside with names on the bags of people who have had cancer and won their battle or have lost their battle with cancer. It was a pretty amazing thing. We had the survivor walk around the track and then each of the teams walked as a group around the track. After that our team split the job of walking and selling food. There was lots of food and entertainment. There was a dunk tank that some team had set up. All sorts of stuff. We kept on running out of food (which was a good thing) and ran to the store to get more supplies. Eventually we just quit and once we ran out we were done selling food. We sold super nachos and mini donuts. The donuts were really good. There was a constant program going on throughout the night. John was asked to pray as we started to light all the candles in the bags. Name were read of survivors and people who hadn't made it, a scavenger hunt, a wet t-shirt contest to see who could ring out the most water into a rain gage. We had Elvis come and sing to us. We also got to visit with some pretty amazing people. We watched as the white paper bags that first spelled HOPE change to CURE. We sang karaoke and tried to stay up all night. Needless to say John took Caristy home around 4 am because it was really cold and she couldn't warm up. John stayed up the whole time.....and came to bed at 7 am. Needless to say we have had a really quiet Saturday with mostly sleeping. It was a pretty amazing thing to be involved in and just watch as our small town who has been effected with way too much cancer banned together to raise money to help support finding a cure for cancer.

VBS Picnic and Closing Program

We had a picnic to close our VBS week. We were fortunate to have people grill for us and lots of food to eat and share. We ate and talked. The kids played on the playground and with the balls. The older guys got in on Frisbee action and John tried to get the Frisbee over the pavilion but he couldn't so we had to climb up and get it. Then we went to the church and the kids sang their songs, said their verses and we watched a slide show from the week. We had a great week, in spite of the heat. We were very lucky to have great teachers and helpers to teach and help out where ever was needed. Thanks we couldn't do it without you!

VBS ~ Wednesday!!

Today is our last day of VBS...which is a good thing because both John and Caristy have been burning the candle at both ends trying to make sure everything is ready for the day and cleaning up after the day is done. Today Caristy wasn't here much because she had her doctor's appointment. (Everything is fine and doing well....the baby dropped which makes getting up from low chairs really hard but otherwise baby is doing fine and so is she!) Our last day we talked about how the disciples shared with everyone about Jesus; his death, resurrection and that he wants all of us to believe so that we can have life with Him. We played games with the parachute and had another water balloon fight. (We also discovered that John was the biggest kid during all the games!) Our craft was painting a flower pot and then planting a marigold seed. We practiced our bible verses and songs and we were going to do for our program later on that night. Today might have been our worse day with the heat because we also had humidity which made it ten times worse. We had 35 kids, which was fun!

VBS ~ Tuesday

Tuesday was an even hotter day than Monday. John planned out a mini Olympics for the kids to do that ended in a water balloon fight. Explorer Deborah came and we learned about Jesus death and resurrection. The lessons that the teachers taught were all about why Jesus died. The craft was a bracelet that we put beads on and every bead had a meaning. We sang songs and learned some new songs. In the afternoon we made sure to have watermelon to eat....it was good! :-) Today we had 36 kids and it was a fun day. Playing with kids is always such a fun time!!

VBS ~ Monday

We found out on Saturday that the people that were going to come and run VBS were able to come because of a family emergency and the rest of their staff had things come up also that they weren't able to come. Saturday John went to go get all the VBS (vacation bible school) materials and then we made a plea to our church for helpers, teachers and help. Sunday night was a late night getting games ready, crafts ready and just getting ready for Monday to start. We got everything ready and waited for the kids to come. On Monday we had 29 kids come! We played games, did group cheers, we made butterfly sun catchers and some of the older kids made crosses and weaved them with plastic string. We had explorer Deborah come and share about evidence that proofs when things are true and make believe. She told the story of Jesus birth and because we have evidence, we know that it happened and it's true. We had a great day!

Zion Youth Bike Trip

We had in the church bulletin that we going to ride our bikes out to a nearby town and go swimming and have a picnic there. Well the day that we chose kids just couldn't come out except 4 kids. We had 3 boys and 1 girl. John rode along and so did Marybeth. Caristy was the designated water car....making sure everyone was doing okay and having fun. It was a 12 mile bike ride but all of them made and had a blast. We went swimming, ate hot dogs and played all sorts of games. :-) Then we drove back!

The Crib is assembled!

We got our crib, changer, and dresser all at the same time. We assembled the changer and dresser a while ago and just have been waiting on putting together the crib. Well we took all the pieces out on Sunday, started assembling things on Monday and got the bedding on it today. We are almost all ready for our baby to come! :-) (I don't think that you are ever entirely ready for a new baby to come into your life.)
Caristy screwing screws by hand!
John cheating and using a machine!

Lots of culture in 2 days! :-)

On Sunday Caristy was invited to see an off Broadway play called the Ark. It was a great play and we all enjoyed the fact that it was funny without needing to have all sorts of language, violence, etc. Then John and Caristy went to movie theatre in town to see the newest Harry Potter movie. We watched it in the middle of a storm so the power went off twice during the movie and just added to our movie adventure. Harry Potter was a pretty good movie, we enjoyed it.
On Monday we went over to the Arstad farm to celebrate Elaine and Cas' 40th Wedding Anniversary and also to listen to Monroe Crossing (a bluegrass group that Elaine and Cas' kids got for them for their anniversary.) They were really good!! We had fun listening to them play and sing.
